- 2. Molecular Tests (PCR or NAATs) These tests detect the genetic material of the flu virus (RNA) from nasal or throat samples. PCR tests can take from 15 minutes to a few hours to return results and are more accurate than RIDTs, offering higher sensitivity and reducing false negatives.
- 3. Viral Culture Viral culture involves growing the flu virus from a sample in a laboratory to confirm its presence. It can take several days for results, making it less commonly used in urgent care settings, though it is highly accurate.
