Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment

Osteopathic manipulative treatment, or OMT, is hands-on care. It involves using the hands to diagnose, treat and prevent illness or injury. Using OMT, Z-2-H® osteopathic physician (D.O.) will treat your muscles and joints using techniques including stretching, gentle pressure and resistance.

OMT can help with:

  • Ease pain
  • Promote healing
  • Increase mobility
  • Pneumonia
  • Post-concussion syndrome/traumatic brain injury
  • Asthma/Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Constipation
  • Acid reflux and gastrointestinal complaints
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Lymphedema
  • Colic
  • Ear infections
  • Pre/Post-partum care

How Is OMT Prescribed?

Z-2-H® physician decision to use OMT is made on a visit-by-visit basis depending on the condition of the patient at the time of each visit. This leads to a significantly lower number of visits than other health care providers who use manipulation.

What Is The Difference Between OMT And Other Forms Of Manipulation?

OMT, used to diagnose and treat injuries and illnesses, uses a variety of methods designed to affect muscles, joints and soft tissues. These methods may include thrusting techniques, but also include gentler techniques to affect the body. OMT also optimizes blood circulation to maintain and restore health while other forms of manipulation tend to focus more on spinal misalignment interfering with nerve transmission.

How Is OMT Performed?

Your structural exam will begin with an assessment of your posture, spine and balance. Z-2-H® physician will then use his/her hands to palpate your back and extremities. He/She will then check your joints for restriction and/or pain with various motions. Based on the exam findings and complexity or severity of your problem, a unique treatment strategy is developed for you.

Using a variety of techniques, Z-2-H® physician will apply OMT to your body affected areas to treat structural abnormalities. Depending on your problem and response to OMT, you may require more than one treatment. The end result is restoration of the body as a whole to maintain better overall health. A thorough knowledge of all systems of the body and comprehensive training give the osteopathic approach make it a safe and effective form of manipulative therapy.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM OMT?

People of all ages, from newborns to senior adults, can benefit from osteopathic manipulative treatment. Applying OMT to muscles, joints and other tissues allows the body to achieve a state of health more quickly and easily. OMT can be helpful in a wide range of clinical conditions, from alleviating pain to shortening hospital recovery time, improving childhood asthma and infant colic.
